Ridge Gourd potato koottu

Peerkangai urulaikizhangu / Ridge gourd potato koottu is a special preparation. It tastes very good and goes well with rice, sambar, poori, chapati and dosa.


Preparation Time : 15 minutes
Cooking Time : 30 minutes
Serves : 2

Ingredients

Ridge Gourd / Peerkangai - 1, big
Potato - 1, big
Onion - 1, medium, sliced
Tomato - 1, large chopped into cubes
Moong Dal / Masoor Dal - 2 tbsp
Grated Coconut - 2 tbsp
Green Chillies- 3, slit
Salt - to taste

To Temper

Oil - 2 tbsp
Mustard - 1 tsp
Urad Dal - 1 tsp
Chana Dal - 2 tsp
Curry Leaves - a few
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp

Procedure

1. Peel and chop the potato and peerkangai finely into cubes
2. Pressure cook the dal and set aside
3. Pressure cook the vegetables(Peerkangai and potato) with the chillies and a little salt and set aside
4. Heat the oil in the kadai, add mustard, after it splutters, add urad dal, chana dal, curry leaves, turmeric powder and saute till the dal turns brown
5. Add the onions, tomato and.cover and cook till it turns soft and mushy. Add the grated coconut and required salt
6. Finally add the cooked vegetables and dal and cover and cook till it thickens. Adjust salt.
7. Serve hot with rice and sambar / poori / dosa / chapati
